No matter what type of curly or wavy hair you have, you can jump on the “naturally curly hair” bandwagon. Here are the simple steps to take to go natural and enhance the natural wave and curls you were born with.
Start With Shampoo
Stripping natural oils from your hair is one sure way to over dry it and eliminate your natural curl pattern. Any sulfates, no matter which type, will strip all the oils from your hair. Sulfates are very common in shampoo because they act as a soap or surfactant, which creates lather and cleans your hair. Sulfates are not the only way to get your hair clean, however. Mixing hair conditioner with lemon juice can work as a cleansing conditioner, making it one step to get your hair clean. This also means you do not need to use an expensive shampoo. If you mix lemon juice with your conditioner, use should use two parts conditioner to one part lemon juice.
No More Traditional Towels
Terry cloth towels are tough on hair, creating frizz with the tiny little loops of terry cloth. The best option for drying your hair is a regular t-shirt. The smooth fabric of a t-shirt does not have the tiny loops that towels do, yet will still absorb water from your hair. If you your head in the inside of the t-shirt you can still wrap it up in a turban like you would with a normal towel. If you have an old t-shirt that you are planning to weed out and throw away, just set it aside in the bathroom for use on your hair.
No More Heat Styling
Sometimes you have to use heat styling tools, but using them is not good for curly hair. If you must use a new hair dryer, make sure you use an appropriate diffuser and hair dryer that will protect your curls as much as possible. Flat ironing hair is not healthy for curly hair so avoid it if at all possible. After all, going “natural” with your curls means you embrace what they are and allow them to lie naturally.
