Alec Cabacungan is among those millions who are born with complex genetic diseases not easily curable. He was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta also called brittle bones disease. This is a rare disease of bones in which bones are pretty weak and can break easily. His parents first couldn’t understand what it was but later when it seemed serious his doctors after thorough examination suggested that it is quite hazardous. Of course, they were devastated but they had no option except to fight. He was admitted to Shriners Children’s Hospital and his treatment started.
Alec was born on 8th May, 2002 as of now he is 19 years old. He is the fourth child and only son of Gil and Alma. At first, they were confused and worried like any parent would be at their stage. But now they are very proud of their son as they never thought that he would achieve so much in his life. Alec tries to live as normally as his disease allows. He is a sports fan and plays wheel chair basketball.
Alec came into spotlight at the age of 12 when he was asked to appear in the hospital’s advertisement. Like most kids of his age, he was shy and concerned about the opinions of his friends. But he was convinced by staff and his parents on the grounds that he will be educating those out there who don’t know what are they dealing with. That’s when he said yes for the endeavor which will take him to the national stage and will inspire many. Also, the hospital funds started rising as the donations piled up.
It resulted in the personal fame of Alec. Whenever he was in public, people started noticing him and through them he realized that the commercial was a big success which added to his confidence that he can do great things with that. Furthermore, Alec became a motivational speaker, inspiring people with his own story to more forward in face of any hurdle. He also interviews athletes due to his interest in sports and has also appeared on sports shows like TNT.
Alec is a live inspiration for millions. His story gives courage to his listeners that if he can make it despite 60 bones broken in his short lifetime, they can make it too. He has proved that you can live a normal life even against over whelming odds. Currently he is a college freshman and studies journalism.
